GREAT RIFT VALLEY HIKE PACKING CHECKLIST

  • While Driver Guides carry a car first aid kit, we recommend that each person has their own first aid kit with essentials such as paracetamol, anti-diarrheal, antihistamines, topical antibiotic, bandages, blister packs, ankle brace and prescription medicines.

  • We recommend enough to hold 3 litres.

  • Hiking shoes preferably with some decent ankle support

  • Gaiters for those that have low cut hiking shoes

  • The mornings can be cool depending upon the time of year and the Crater has cool mornings most of the year due to the elevation.

  • In light colours.

  • Buff or lightweight neck gaiter (for keeping out dust or sun on the neck)

  • You will appreciate taking your boots off after a day of hiking. We recommend flip flops or ugg boots for camp.

  • Be sure to bring spare bulbs and batteries.

  • For the most part, there are two types of electrical sockets (outlets) used in Tanzania: the “Type G” British BS-1363 and the “Type D” Indian (old British BS-546 5 amp “small”) sockets.

Best to get a universal adaptor with USB capabilities.

  • For most purposes, 7x21 compact binoculars will be fine, but birdwatchers will find a 10x magnification more useful.

  • You may like to bring an ebook or Tanzania guide to reference when you are on safari.

  • The roads can get bumpy. For those with back issues we recommend a cushion to help with the bumps.

Luggage Information

Sometimes luggage is delayed by airlines. It is recommended to take a change of clothing and any essential medication in your hand luggage. It’s also advisable to wear walking shoes (if applicable) on the plane.

Bag Tags + Locks

Please ensure all your bags have baggage tags with your name, contact telephone number. It is also a very good idea to put a label with your name, address and telephone number, as well as a copy of your hotel details inside each piece of luggage. Locks are advisable in room during your accomodation stay to avoid any disputes.

Luggage Allowance

Regardless of what international airline baggage allowances are, you are restricted to 15-20 kg for your internal flights within Tanzania. Please read the baggage allowances carefully on your tickets.
